Side by Side Project

The project presents the stories of 100 Koreans who came out of South Korean orphanages. 88 were adopted to Western countries around the world. 12 aged out of their orphanages.

We filmed in 7 countries, 6 languages, and 16 cities. Each interview lasted up to an hour.

All 100 individual interviews (in nearly unedited form) stream at sidebysideproject.com. On the website, you’ll also find background info on the project, press links, a director’s commentary video, etc.

18 months ago, we adapted the project into a 38-minute short film for screening at film festivals, conferences, events, adoptee meetings, etc. This film is not available for online streaming, but here’s the trailer link: https://vimeo.com/267318996. If you would like to see it, I’m happy to send you a password-protected link, with the agreement that you won’t share it.

3 months ago, in partnership with the New York Times, we adapted the project into a 16-minute doc, “Given Away.” This film launched on the homepage of the NYT and later on the NYT YouTube channel.

We have also just completed exhibitions of the project in Seoul and New York City, featuring a 13-screen digital video installation. But I doubt that’s relevant here..
