Adoption is an event that happened in my life to create my family.
Family is created with love, not DNA, and is my strength.
Identity is an ever-changing concept that is influenced by what is around us.
I wish people knew that being adopted doesn’t make us any less loved than anyone else.
My advice is if you’re curious about adoption, just ask don’t make assumptions.
My advice to adoptees is to try to connect with other adoptees and the adoptee community.
I want to tell you (adoptee) is that you are loved, you are part of a bigger community that can support you, and that adoption is just one part of your identity.
I want to tell you (adoptive parents) that it’s important to help normalize adoption and expose your child to their heritage but you have to do it at the adoptees’ own pace. You can’t force them to accept their adoption or shape their identity for them.
I want to tell you that adoption is a way to create a family. It’s not charity or something that people should necessarily be praised for. It’s just one way to create a family.
I’m proud to be adopted because it makes my family interesting and I like being in a multicultural environment.
